5 Indesign Tips & Tricks for Beginners

June 29, 2010  |   Blog   |     |   2 Comments

Indesign is a great programme by Adobe and is available in the CS suite. Indesign is the standard programme used by designers to create press ready artwork. I have been using Indesign for many years now and I would like to share some helpful tips and tricks with you. Please note this tutorial is created by using CS3 on the Macintosh platform.

1. How to Create an Indent using backslash

COMMAND (/) (After the space press command and (/), this will give an indent until the end of paragraph, the return key deactivates the indent.

2. How to Create an Indent of 5mm with tabs

In this example the indent is 5mm activated by the TAB key, no space required, remember to insert -5mm to bring back the first line 5mm.

3. Fit Picture in Graphic Box

Draw graphic box with graphic box icon (see below) click in box, press command-D to get picture and then shift-option-command to fit picture in box.

4. Automatic Page Numbering

Create a Master Page in this sample I created a Master Page A, Place cursor where you want your page number to appear, then follow diagram below, you will see the letter A instead of a number. Once you create new pages using Master A your page number will appear automatically. Saves alot of time.

5. How to insert rules above and below in a paragraph

If you want to set rules above or below in a paragraph, the easiest way I have found is to go to your paragraph pallet, click on the right down arrow (right hand corner), open paragraph rules and click on either Rule Below or Above and fill out your offset or other information required. That’s it.
